Seized by God's love, we work in collaboration with others to bring union and reconciliation to our world, "That all may be one."
The Sisters of St. Joseph
The Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine are a diocesan congregation of women religious who have been serving the Catholic Church of Florida since 1866. Founded in LePuy, France, in 1650, the Sisters were invited to the missionary field of Florida by Bishop Augustin Verot, specifically to teach and evangelize the freed slaves at the end of the Civil War.
Centered in contemplation, the vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph is to work toward changing patterns of relationship that may contribute to alienation, poverty and oppression.
Our Current and Future Needs
The Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine is a 501(c)3 tax exempt, non-profit organization. The ministry of the Sisters is supported by limited income from our labors and by generous benefactors, augmented by pensions, social security and investments. As a religious congregation, we are an entity of the Church, but do notreceive financial support from the Church or diocese.
Like our beloved patron, St. Joseph, we are experiencing some uncertainty in these challenging economic times, along with the many people we serve. We continue to be actively involved in ministries throughout the state. Sisters continue to serve in diocesan leadership, school administration and instruction; parish liturgical and pastoral ministries, pastoral care to the sick, dying and bereaved. Sisters also serve as mental health counselors, therapists, and spiritual directors. Our Spiritual Renewal Center provides space for prayer, reflection and retreats offered by our Sisters, Associates, and other dedicated laity. The spiritual lives of many are enhanced through our creativity in architectural stained glass ministry, music and art.
With a median age of 72 and 70% of the Sisters at least 70 years of age, our Congregation faces an exponential increase in health care and other living costs. Many Sisters have spent a lifetime in ministry and charitable work, but received proportionally little compensation commensurate with their dedication, experience and education. Now the retirement resources for their care are very limited.
As our courageous Sisters before us, we understand the importance of sustainability in guaranteeing a future for our congregation. Prayerful efforts focus on inviting women to engage in mission and ministry as Sisters of St. Joseph in Florida. We are grateful for our many faithful donors who support our ongoing mission in Florida.
