About the Maxims

The Maxims that appear on our website are addressed to laypersons and religious who seek a life with God. They were first published in 1657. Father Jean-Pierre Medaille, SJ, who, with the six original Sisters, founded the Sisters of St. Joseph on October 15, 1650, selected one hundred of the maxims for the Sisters as a brief "resume" of the spirit of the Institute.

To paraphrase Fr. Medaille: Christians, chosen by God to live the Gospel in religious life or in the world, read the following maxims attentively, meditate upon them frequently; I hope Divine Goodness will enlighten you, let you know in what great virtue consists, and help you to practice it.

Each day, one of the 100 Maxims will be featured. To assist in your reflection, scripture references relating to each Maxim as well as suggested applications are provided along with the Maxim. Today's Maxim.

The Scripture References are reproduced from the New American Bible and provided via a link to the United States Conference of Bishops website.
